At Forbes Advisor, we screen hundreds of credit cards. Designed to enhance your travel experience while earning rewards for everything you buy, Venture X may just be one of the best cards we’ve reviewed. This might sound like an exaggeration, but after seeing all the features of this card, see if you can disagree, and the annual fee is much lower than its closest competitor.

First, the welcome bonus speaks for itself: Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 in the first three months of account opening.

Earning rewards on your card couldn’t be easier: Earn 2 miles per $1 on all eligible purchases, 5 miles per $1 on flights, and $1 on hotels and rental cars when booking through Capital One Travel Take 10 miles. No opt-in, worry about categories, or shopping from specific providers.

Redeeming miles is just as easy. You can use miles on any travel purchases made with your card. You also have the option to switch to a travel partner if you want to level up your redemption game.

The card offers the protections a travel card deserves, including trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance. It also offers ubiquitous Priority Pass membership, which gives you and two guests access to over 1,000 airport lounges worldwide upon registration. There’s also a Capital One Lounge network, but it’s small at the moment.

Venture X isn’t perfect, however, due to the lack of hotel partners on the competitive map.

Venture X offers a bonus of 10,000 Anniversary Points for an annual fee of $395 and up to $300 in credit per year for bookings made through Capital One Travel. Those two alone can justify the annual fee when you’re calculating whether the card makes sense for you. Travel points are limited to the portal, but using points is nowhere near as difficult as the American Express Platinum® Air Travel Points.

Capital One Venture X Card Rewards

Earn rewards

Earning on the Venture X Card is fairly straightforward for most purchases: 2 miles per dollar on all eligible purchases, 5 miles per dollar on flights, and 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars when booking through Capital One Travel Earn 10 miles in dollars.

You’ll notice increased travel revenue, but there’s a catch: they only apply to your use of the Capital One portal. Airfare is no problem, especially since they work with Hopper to help you find the best deals. However, for hotels and car rentals, if you book through an OTA, you may lose your status benefits, which hotels and car rental companies may think the portal is.

Also earn 10,000 Risk Miles each card anniversary.

Redeem rewards

Venture has won awards in the past for ease of use, and Venture X offers an equally simple way to start your journey. You can book any trip as usual, and when the bill comes, you can use your miles to buy anything in that category. Keep in mind that sometimes things you think will count towards your travel costs, such as theme park tickets, may end up in a different category.

You can also redeem rewards for 1 cent per point on Capital One’s travel portal. This is useful for airline tickets because your benefits apply no matter how you purchased the ticket. There are other uses, such as Amazon and redeeming gift cards, but these don’t usually get you every penny you travel.

Finally, you can transfer your Venture Miles to multiple travel partners including Air Canada Aeroplan (United partner), Air France/KLM Flying Blue (Delta partner) or British Airways Avios (American partner) partner). However, if you want easy redemption on American Airlines, Capital One Miles isn’t the best option.

Capital One also has unique hotel partners, of which Wyndham is particularly attractive to families because Wyndham lets you redeem vacation rentals for 15,000 points per room. However, Capital One lacks well-known hotel partners such as Hyatt, Hilton or Marriott.

Reward Potential

The 2 miles per dollar earned on this card makes it easy to figure out how much you can earn. Forbes Advisor uses data from various government agencies to determine base income and average spend for each category, which we use to compile the reward potential of various credit cards. 70% of working families have an annual income of $100,172 and a standard expenditure of $52,820. Assuming 50% of spending is charged to this card, the total annual spend on the card is $26,410. This brings the annual benefit to 52,820 miles.

You can also earn extra miles on flights, hotels and car rentals booked through the Capital One portal. For incentive purposes, we only consider airfare, as many customers choose to book hotels and car rentals directly for elite status benefits. Our family spends $1,755 a year on airfare and earns an additional 8,775 entrepreneurial miles for a total of 61,595 entrepreneurial miles on top of the first year and anniversary awards.

How the Capital One Venture X Card Stacks

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Platinum Card® from American Express

The American Express Platinum (terms and conditions apply; see rates and fees) is an OG Premium card. The card earns American Express membership rewards, which are great value because they’re so flexible. While Capital One Miles moves to airline partners, Membership Rewards has more domestic partners like Delta and Hilton, which makes it easier to use Membership Rewards points for those who don’t want to dig into the rewards table.

American Express sells exclusivity through the Platinum Card, bundling “lifestyle perks” like Equinox membership points with the travel benefits you’d expect from a Travel Rewards card when you sign up. American Express Centurion Lounge and Delta Sky Lounge access (if you’re flying with Delta on the same day) exceeds Capital One’s initial lounge service in addition to your Priority Pass when you sign up.

However, using Amex points is more difficult than using Capital One: Amex pays many of its points in monthly instalments and charges others (for example, while Capital One requires purchases through a travel portal to earn travel points, since fares can be purchased through Book any way and still qualify for elite benefits, a requirement that seems manageable for most travelers.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card with Chase Sapphire Reserve

Chase Sapphire Reserve® provides the best competition to date for Amex Platinum. With Venture X combining its strengths with a low annual fee in almost every way, maybe it’s time for Sapphire Reserve to take the spotlight. That said, the Sapphire Reserve remains a solid card with up to $300 in travel benefits (not capped like the Venture X), TSA PreCheck/Global Entry fee credits, strong travel protection, and a $550 Priority Pass Membership costs per year. Chase is also building a network of lounges.

There’s one area where Chase excels: For many users, Sapphire Reserve’s travel partner is much more powerful than Capital One’s. Say it with me: “United and Hyatt.” The ability to earn points for these two transfer partners may be worth the higher fee for some at Sapphire Reserve.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card vs Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

If you like the idea of flat-rate travel rewards but don’t like the expensive annual fee, the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card might be a good option. The annual fee drops to $95, but you still get great rewards: 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rentals booked through Capital One Travel, and unlimited 2 miles per dollar on other purchases.

Ease of use is the name of the game with the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card, just like Venture X. To redeem, simply add your miles directly to the cost of travel on the card at one cent per mile. Venture Miles are also transferable to the same partners as Venture X on the same terms.

Is the Capital One Venture X Card Right for You?

If you already have Amex Platinum or Chase Sapphire Reserve in your wallet, take a close look at Venture X when renewing. For a significantly lower annual fee, you get many of the same benefits as other premium travel credit cards. Even better, Venture X solves many of the problems that Amex Platinum has plagued its customers with its ever-evolving approach to coupons. Even families that only travel a few times a year should be one step ahead with this card. This X not only marks the place, but also rewrites the map.
