The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is already one of our favorites, but it just got even better for new cardholders.
This week, Chase announced a new limited-time welcome offer for the Sapphire Preferred — earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first three months of account opening. This is worth $1,000 when you redeem travel credits with Chase Ultimate Rewards.
It’s the card’s biggest welcome offer since last year’s massive 100,000-point bonus. It comes at just the right time for travelers who are ready to book their summer vacation.
Here’s what you need to know about the new Chase Sapphire Preferred product and how to maximize your bonus points with this card:
How to Take Advantage of the 80,000 Points Welcome Offer
“The Chase Sapphire Preferred is one of the best travel cards by any means, but this new 80,000-point sign-up bonus makes it even more appealing,” said Benet Wilson, senior credit card editor at The Points Guy (owned by Red Ventures). such as NextAdvisor).
The new 80,000 points reward up to $1,000 worth of travel rewards thanks to the 25% points boost on the Sapphire Preferred Card. When redeeming travel points through Chase Ultimate Rewards, each point is worth 1.25 cents instead of the standard 1 cent per point redeemed.
To take advantage of the offer, make sure the minimum spend is within your budget. You may want to time your application so you’re ready to book travel or make an upcoming big purchase. This allows you to earn spending rewards as you work towards earning bonuses – all within your budget.
For example, if you’re planning a summer vacation, you can use the Sapphire Preferred Card to pay for flights and hotels and earn double points per dollar (and five times if you book through Chase). At the same time, bring the cost closer to the $4,000 quote requirement. Once you qualify for the bonus, you can save your points to redeem for future travel.
How long does the 80,000 point bonus last?
The typical ongoing Chase Sapphire Preferred welcome offer is 60,000 points after spending the same $4,000 within three months of account opening.
Chase hasn’t released any information on how long the new 80,000-point reward will last, but it’s a limited-time offer — and historically, Chase’s limited-time offers don’t last long.
For example, the bonus offer of 100,000 points added last year starts in June 2021 and ends in October of the same year.
How to Maximize the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card
Aside from its welcome benefits, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is an excellent travel credit card for its rewards and perks.
It doesn’t offer as many luxury travel perks or points as its premium sister card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve, but the Sapphire Preferred only charges a $95 annual fee and can help you earn points for everyday purchases for future travel.
Here’s an overview of the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card rewards:
- 5x points on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards
- 3X points on food and beverages (includes eligible deliveries and takeaways)
- 3X points on select streaming services
- 3X points on groceries online
- 2x points on all other travel purchases not booked through Chase
- Everything else 1X points
Chase also has a wide range of reward categories that can help you earn more points over time. For example, the 2x travel category includes not only flight and hotel reservations, but also public transportation, taxis, tolls, and parking.
When you’re ready to redeem your points, redeem your travel with Chase Ultimate Rewards at a 1.25 cents per point boost, or transfer your points 1:1 to one of Chase’s travel partners for maximum value. The full list of affiliate programs includes:

During the pandemic, Chase also launched Pay Yourself Bank, which gives you more flexibility to redeem points at the same premium rate as travel (1.25 cents per point for the Chase Sapphire Preferred). Currently, you can use Pay Yourself Back to use your Sapphire Preferred card to redeem points for Airbnb purchases (until June 30, 2022) or select charities (until December 31, 2022). Other redemption options include cash, gift cards and paying with points at online checkout.
On each account anniversary, you’ll earn bonus points equal to 10% of the previous year’s total purchases. For example, if you spend a total of $50,000 in a year, 5,000 points will automatically be added to your account.
Also earn $50 in annual credit on hotel purchases through Chase Ultimate Rewards, travel and shopping protection, including trip cancellation and car rental insurance.
