Truist was formed in 2019 from the merger of BB&T and SunTrust Bank. According to Federal Reserve data, as of December 31, 2021, Truist was the seventh-largest bank in the United States.

What we like

  • There is no monthly service fee for your Truist Bright Checking account as long as you have at least $500 of eligible direct deposit per month.
  • With no minimum deposit requirements and no monthly service fees, the Truist Online Savings Account can be used by just about anyone.

We have nothing

  • Outgoing international cable is $65.
  • Unlike some competitors, Truist doesn’t offer Sunday customer service hours.

Checking accounts

Truist offers four checking accounts, including the Truist Bright checking account evaluated for this review. It’s only $50 to open an account, but there’s a $12 monthly fee unless you maintain a minimum daily balance of $1,500 or make a monthly direct deposit of $500 or more.

Students attending college near Truist banks and ATMs should consider the bank’s student checking account, which has no monthly service fee and no minimum deposit. Students must be 23 years of age or younger to be eligible.

What we like

  • Open a Bright Checking account with Truist for just $50.
  • An eligible $500 direct deposit is a way for some account holders to avoid the average $1,500 account balance.
  • Truist offers free checking accounts for students 23 and younger.

  • The service fee of $12 per month is steep.
  • There is a $3 fee to receive paper statements using a Truist Bright Checking or Student Checking account.

Savings accounts

Truist Online Savings Accounts have no minimum deposit requirements and no monthly fees. But the account did not deliver a competitive rate of return. Its APY is lower than national average.

  • There is no monthly service fee for the Truist Online Savings Account.

We have nothing

  • Truist Online Savings Accounts cannot earn competitive APY.
  • Paper statements cost $3 per month.

CD rates

According to its website, Truist offers CDs with terms ranging from 7 days to 5 years. However, review revealed only four terms were offered online: six months, one year, 18 months and two years. Each of these CD terms shows four balance tiers, but all have the same APY, which is lower than national average.

The minimum deposit requirement for Truist CDs with terms ranging from 32 days to 5 years is $1,000. Truist’s short-term CDs (terms between 7 and 31 days) require a $2,500 deposit.

What we like

  • According to its website, Truist offers CDs with terms ranging from 7 days to 5 years.
  • CDs older than 31 days and up to 5 years can be opened for as little as $1,000, less than some banks charge.

We have nothing

  • The minimum amount to open a short-term CD with a term of 7 to 31 days is $2,500.
  • Truist’s website says the bank offers CDs with terms ranging from seven days to five years, but review found only four terms, ranging from six months to two years.

Money market account

You can open a money market account with The Truist for as little as $100.

There is no monthly service fee as long as your daily account balance is at least $1,000. The account is authorized to write checks.

At the time of review, all six balances paid the same APY, below the national average.

What we like

  • You can open this account with a $100 deposit.
  • Truist money market accounts have checking privileges.

We have nothing

  • If you don’t keep a daily ledger of at least $1,000, there’s a monthly service fee of $12.
  • Withdrawals and transfers are limited to six per statement cycle. There is a $15 fee for each additional withdrawal or transfer over the limit.

Banking experience

Truist has approximately 2,500 stores in 17 states and the District of Columbia. Customers can get assistance with their accounts by phone from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday and Saturday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Customer service representatives are not available on Sundays, but there is an automated 24-hour helpline.

Truist’s app has a 4.5-star rating on iOS and a 3.2-star rating on Google Play. Like many banks, Cell allows Truist customers to send and receive money. The app can also be used to deposit checks and block Truist debit cards.
