The Bilt Rewards credit card allows tenants to earn credit card rewards for paying rent (with important caveats and limitations) and other purchases. Cardholders earn 1 point per $1 of free rental paid (up to $50,000 per year in rent), 2 points per dollar of travel (when booked directly with an airline, hotel, car rental, or cruise line), every 1 Earn 3 points per dollar on meals and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. The card also offers interest on point balances, complex and qualifying point rewards for new and renewed leases with partner landlords, and a tiered loyalty program based on the number of points earned each year.
The card’s 1 point per dollar of rent is completely unique and may be worth it for those who are spending a fortune on rent, but those interested in making the big bucks may consider this card to be at least 2% cash Return a card pair and just want to use the card to rent and dine while putting everything else on the 2% cash back card. Whether this will generate enough points to earn Bilt Rewards card status and subsequent benefits and maximize rewards should be carefully assessed and weighed against the effort required to set up and operate such a structure. For those who don’t get any real benefit from the tier, only using the card for points earned on rent and food, while pairing the card with a 2% flat rate cashback card can work well.
Even those landlords who aren’t part of a Bilt Rewards rental partner can use the Bilt Rewards program app to earn rental credits — Bilt issues checks to landlords when rent is paid through the app. Any eligible U.S. citizen can join the Bilt Rewards program and receive rewards for paying rent through the Bilt Rewards program app, but only those who apply for and qualify for a Bilt Rewards credit card receive higher card rewards and perks, including MasterCard Card World Elite benefits. Rewards points for completing rental agreements do not apply to rental agreements outside of Bilt’s Bilt Rewards Alliance.

Earn rewards
The Bilt Rewards Card earns 1 free point per $1 in rent paid (up to $50,000 per year in rent) and 2 points per dollar of travel (when booked directly with an airline, hotel, car rental, or cruise line). 3 points per dollar on meals and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. The card also earns interest on points on point balances based on the National Savings Rate set by the FDIC (note that it’s currently below 1%), and through new and renewed rentals with Bilt Rewards Alliance hosts on the web Get bonus points.
Bilt found that paying rent with a credit card was like a classic airline rewards program. The Bilt Rewards program tier system determines the benefits, benefits, and tier tiers earned by earning rewards each year, and points must be maintained each year or tiers will be lost:
- Blue – Anyone registered for Bilt Rewards with less than 25,000 points
- Silver – earn 25,000 points
- Gold – earn 50,000 points
- Platinum – Earn 100,000 Points
Levels unlock a variety of perks, including earning interest on points, homeowner concierge services to help with home purchases (points can be used to pay off your mortgage), bonus points for new or renewed leases, and gifts of decor and art. We provide a table to explain what benefits are available at each tier.
Use Bilt Rewards Card Points to transfer partners, the points on this card show their value: With a 1:1 point transfer between different partners, Bilt Rewards points are valuable beyond the redemption options offered by Bilt: IHG Hotels, American Airlines AAdvantage, Aeroplan, Emirates Skywards, Flying Blue, Turkey Miles & Smiles, Virgin Points, Hawaiian Miles and World of Hyatt.
The calculations required to determine whether this card versus other alternatives (such as a 2% cash back card) is truly worthwhile depends on each consumer’s unique needs and spending habits.
Redeem rewards
Bilt rewards can be redeemed in a number of ways. One of Bilt’s main goals is to help renters afford it. Ultimately, if the financing comes from the Bilt, the Bilt reward can redeem the future mortgage on the new home.
At the same time, cardholders have access to reliable redemption options. One of the most popular is probably 1:1 transfers with airline and hotel partners. Partners include:
- Air Canada Aeroplan
- Air France/KLM Flying Blue
- American Airlines Advantage
- Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
- Emirates Skywards
- Hawaiian Airlines Hawaii Miles
- Turkish Miles and Smiles
- United MileagePlus
- Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
- IHG Awards
- World of Hyatt
Bilt points can also be used for group fitness classes or subscriptions to SoulCycle, Rumble, and Y7, starting at 3,500 points, and items from The Bilt Collection starting at 5,000 points, with rental credits of 0.55 cents per point.
At launch, travel partner transfers will be the cheapest way to use Bilt Rewards points. Of the transit partners, American Airlines is the most interesting, as it has not been involved in any other transit programs for a long time.
Reward Potential
To determine the rewards potential of the Bilt Rewards credit card, we need to consider the amount US households are likely to spend on the card each year. Forbes Advisor uses data from various government agencies to determine basic income and average spending for each category. 70% of wage-earning households bring in $100,172 per year, and our payout is based on that number.
We estimate that in addition to the roughly $13,000 per year in rent, the family has $26,410 in expenses that could reasonably be charged to the credit card. We estimate the family will spend $4,406 in restaurants, earning 12,218 points per year, and $3,185 on travel, earning 6,370 points per year. The remaining $18,819 in credit card purchases plus $13,000 in rent payments would result in 31,819 points earned per year, for a total of 50,407 points per year.

How the cards are stacked
BILT Mastercard* and Chase Freedom Flex℠
Freedom Flex offers the following rewards: 5% cash back up to $1,500 in quarterly rotating categories (activation required), 5% on travel purchases through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3% at restaurants and pharmacies, and 1% on all other purchases.
This reward structure is very different from Bilt rewards, but may be more beneficial, depending on an individual’s spending habits. Cardholders who follow the same spending pattern above will earn 79,918 points per year, far more than what they can earn with a Bilt Rewards card.
Freedom Flex also offers a welcome bonus: $200 bonus after spending $500 in the first 3 months of account opening 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months after account opening, then a variable APR of 14.99 – 23.74% applies .Introductory balance transfer fee of $5 or 3% of each transfer amount, whichever is greater for the first 60 days, and $5 or 5% of each transfer amount thereafter, whichever is greater, BILT Rewards Doesn’t offer any of the above, and while it offers Mastercard World Elite benefits, it doesn’t offer the broader benefits that Chase offers, including trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance, comprehensive car rental insurance, extended warranties, and more.
BILT Mastercard* and Citi® Double Cash Cards
Citi Double Cash offers 2% cash back on all purchases – 1% on purchases and 1% on withdrawals. This simple reward collection system may appeal to those who don’t want the hassle of the Bilt Rewards card’s limited collection category structure or complex reward point options.
Because the Bilt Rewards card earns rental incentives and Citi Double Cash does not, the formula used to assess each consumer’s ability to earn incentives is based on rental versus non-rental spend. The Bilt Rewards card can easily outpace Citi Double Cash on high rents – but if non-rental expenses exceed rental expenses, Citi Double Cash may generate better income.
Bilt Rewards offers World Mastercard Elite benefits that Citi Double Cash does not offer, but Citi Double Cash offers an introductory APR: 0% introductory APR for 18-month balance transfers. After that, the standard variable APR based on credit rating is 14.24% – 24.24%. There is also an initial balance transfer fee of $5 or 3% of any transferred amount within the first 4 months of account opening, whichever is greater. After that, the fee is 5% of each transfer (minimum $5). So all the reasons for not earning rewards for choosing one card over another depend almost entirely on credit card usage and benefit priority.
BILT Mastercard* and Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card*
With Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature, cardholders earn 5% cash back on eligible Prime memberships at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market, 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations, and pharmacies, and all other purchases 1%. For those who shop regularly at Whole Foods and Amazon.com, this has a lot of cash-back potential and should carefully weigh Bilt Rewards’ rent/non-rent expenses and income structure.
Cardholders who spend under the above model will earn 53,470 Amazon Rewards Points (which can be redeemed for nearly $535 in cash). It’s not just cash back on the same purchases on the Bilt Card, but the Bilt Card offers even more ways to redeem points.
The Amazon Prime Rewards card offers a welcome bonus as soon as the card is approved: Amazon.com Gift Cards. There are many other benefits that Bilt Rewards doesn’t offer yet, including travel accident insurance, baggage delay and loss insurance, and extended warranty protection. Bilt Rewards offers the benefits included in the Mastercard World Elite card, such as mobile phone protection and purchase protection. Bilt Card also offers trip cancellation and trip delay insurance.
Is this card right for you?
The Bilt Rewards credit card may be a viable option for those who want to earn rewards from their rent and don’t want to overwhelm their wallet with multiple credit cards. The premium value versus other options (such as the 2% cash back card) should be carefully calculated before using the card, as each person’s situation will vary based on their rental expenses, non-rental expenses and desired benefits. While “rent incentives” sound tempting, the benefits advertised on this card are only available to people in certain circumstances, and sometimes only to those with certain landlords.
