Using data from various government agencies, consultants have estimated how much households making up 70 percent of income spend in different categories each year. 70% of working families earn $100,172 a year and can pay $26,410 by credit card. These numbers are used to estimate the potential returns of the card.
One of the largest spending categories for most households is groceries, with the average household spending $5,687 on groceries in a year, which equates to a $284.35 reward when spending at BJ’s.
Storage clubs often have the cheapest gas, so it might make sense to head to the club to refuel. Our example household buys $2,687 per year in gasoline, or 1,075 gallons at $2.50 per gallon. Assuming you buy all your gas from BJ to get a 10 cents per gallon gas rebate, the annual gas rebate could be worth $107.50
The card also offers 2% cash back on meals. With meals costing $4,406 per year, you earn $88.12 in this category.
Finally, on all other purchases that can reasonably be charged to your credit card, you’ll get $136.30 in cash back per year, giving you a total annual return of $508.77 plus a $107.50 gas rebate.
If you spend more at Warehouse Clubs than the average household, the above points may not represent your actual earning potential. If you shop frequently at Warehouse Clubs or want to make a bulk purchase, such as larger equipment, computers or furniture, your rewards may be much higher with BJ’s Perks Elite Mastercard.
