Filing tax returns can be expensive. Some popular tax software programs cost more than $50 to file federal returns, plus additional state tax filing fees. But your credit card can help you save $20 or more in tax filing fees this year.

If you have a relatively simple tax return, you can save money by using online tax preparation software. You may be able to save even more thanks to credit card and other tax refunds available this tax season.

To help you get the best deal on tax software fees, we reached out to several credit card issuers and online savings aggregators to compile a list of currently available deals. Here’s what we found and what you need to know before signing up.

This page will be updated if these offers change or more issuers respond.

What You Should Know About Tax Savings

If you’re looking to save on taxes with a credit card or online savings offer, there are a few rules to keep in mind. Since these are usually targeted offers, these offers can vary by issuer and even account. They may vary based on your specific card, spending habits and other factors.

You may need to sign up for the offer through your account and may even need to click through the portal to make a purchase. For example, you can opt-in to Amex offers by logging into the mobile app and linking your qualifying card. However, some Citi offers require you to click through your card account to the affiliate website where the offer is located.

Another factor to consider is the expiration date of available offers. While this year’s tax day is April 18, some offers may only be available until March, which means you’ll need to file your tax return early to qualify for the savings. Due to expected processing delays, the IRS recommends filing your tax return earlier this year.

Here’s a rundown of every tax preparation software product we’ve seen so far, along with some expert tips on how to save on tax preparation this year.

More Tips on Finding Tax Prep Deals

Online portals and credit card deals are great ways to save money on online tax preparation and filing, but they’re not the only way to put a few bucks back in your pocket. When you’re ready to submit, it pays to keep an eye out for offers from other retailers or accounts you frequent. Here are more tips for saving on tax software this year:

  • Check your email for promotions. The tax software companies you’ve used in the past may be eager to welcome you back this tax season. Some tax companies may send promotional codes that you can use to save when submitting your application. Archiving with the same software can also save you time; if you saved tax or personal information from previous years into your account, you may not need to re-enter it this year.
  • Pay attention to the companies you buy frequently. Some work with tax software companies to offer you discounts as a member or customer. If you buy tax preparation software directly from big retailers like Costco and Target, they may offer discounts. These procedures are different from filing your taxes online, but work in much the same way, allowing you to file your tax return by email.
  • Look out for offers on tax software websites. Sometimes programs like TurboTax or H&R Block offer offers for improved services – such as B. Tax expert support for the same price as other tax software services. “These deals are great value for those who don’t have super easy returns but don’t want to pay the full cost of these companies’ quality products,” said Kristin McGrath, procurement expert at RetailMeNot.
  • Check if you are eligible for IRS free documents. This option allows you to file federal taxes for free. State tax preparation and filing are also free. To be eligible, your adjusted gross income must be less than $73,000.
  • Look for quotes that are closer to submission. The new benefits may appear throughout the tax season. Therefore, if you are close to the time when you are ready to submit, you may find new offers that were not previously available.
